How to Calculate Percentages
A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred". Percentages are used everywhere — in finance, statistics, cooking, shopping, science and everyday life.
Basic Percentage Formulas
The three most common percentage calculations are:
- Finding a percentage of a number: Multiply the number by the percentage divided by 100. For example, 25% of 200 = 200 × 0.25 = 50.
- Finding what percentage one number is of another: Divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100. For example, 50 is what % of 200? = (50 ÷ 200) × 100 = 25%.
- Percentage change: Subtract the original from the new value, divide by the original, and multiply by 100. For example, from 100 to 125 = ((125−100) ÷ 100) × 100 = 25% increase.
